Calendar Directory Employment Center for Studies in Physics and Biology -- Center Home Laboratories Fellows People at the Center -- Seminars Location Physics Servers Rockefeller Mathematics Seminar -- Center for Studies in Physics and Biology The Center is a group of scientists working on problems at the interface of physical and biological science. Much of the work at the Center aims to understand how physical laws govern the operation of the biochemical machinery and the processing of information inside cells. To this end, we study both the basic physical properties of biological systems (such as elasticity of DNA and DNA-protein interactions) and the application of physical techniques to the modeling of neural, genetic and metabolic networks. Current research projects at the Center range in character from bioinformatics to molecular biophysics to neuroscience and include: Clustering analysis of DNA chip experiments and development of highly sensitive chips. Use of statistical mechanics to uncover significant "words" in the DNA sequence. Experimental studies of cooperative binding of the protein RecA to DNA. Auditory scene analysis and neural code of the early auditory system in rodents.
